Persecution Around the World

World MapThe harassment and persecution of Christians is a worldwide phenomenon. Voice of the Martyrs, through its International Christian Association, works in approximately 50 countries where the Gospel is opposed, supporting those who proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ despite the personal cost.

Voice of the Martyrs is committed to supporting Christians wherever they might be found, in countries as diverse as Pakistan, China, India and the Sudan.

Use the menu to the left to learn more about the political and religious conditions in a variety of countries. More countries will be added to the list over time.

Defining Persecution

No nation is completely free of persecution wherever Christianity is practiced. In western, democratic nations, persecution may occur randomly and spasmodically despite the assumption of religious freedom. These nations we refer to as Mostly Free. Other nations may be described as Hostile or Restricted, according to the level of persecution.

The Constitution provides for freedom of religion and the Government generally respects this right in practice; however, local authorities sometimes restricted the rights of members of nontraditional religious minority groups. While most citizens practice their religion without restriction, the worship of some citizens, particularly members of non-traditional faiths, has been restricted by intimidation and the use of force by right-wing nationalists whom the Government has failed to control.
